Carmel Apple Cider

Carmel Apple Cider
On November 13th Soulful Soap hosted its 1st ever Holiday Soap Open House which was  huge success and a fantastic way to kick off this holiday season. It was a wonderful excuse to decorate for Christmas early, eat and be merry! The morning of the open house well before eager soapers made the journey out to the Soulful Soap headquarters I was surprised with  one of the most memorable surprises to date.
I graduated from nursing school 4 years ago now and had not seen my friends since then. Three of them made the trek out from Kirkland Lake and Sudbury to surprise me the morning of the open house by hiding in my stairwell, lets just say there were lots of tears of joy and I still have to pinch myself when I think about it. Thanks ladies it was so nice to see you and catch up!

On another note, my first batches of Christmas soap (Candy Cane Sparkle and Pumpkin Spice) are all sold out but have no fear another batch of each will be ready for sale December 2nd including the 3rd and final Christmas soap, Carmel Apple Cider. Order soon, handmade soap is a great and unique gift to give!

A Simple Kind of Soap--> Unscented, Uncoloured

A Purist's Dream
I've have been getting many requests from customers with extremely sensitive skin looking for a great all around bar of soap that can be used on their delicate skin without causing an uncomfortable dry, itchy reaction.  I immediately got to work creating this soap using 100% olive oil. This bar is scentless, colourless, lathers beautifully and leaves your skin feeling soft and moisturized. But then again all handmade cold process soap leaves you feeling soft because of it's natural glycerin content.
When commercial soaps are made the moisturizing glycerin is extracted and sold to other company's to add to lotions and creams leaving you with a drying bar of soap. Once you try handmade soap you will never buy a commercially made bar ever again, it's that good and your skin will thank you.

On another note, Soulful Soap has a Facebook Fan page you can join for more up to date information as to whats going on here in the soap room!

Updates

Its has been over a month since my last post and a lot has happened good and bad in business and family. I was accepted to have a booth to sell my handmade soaps at St. Jacob's market out in Waterloo, Ontario. I had a date set in August to go out there bright and early. I spent a month preparing, making and wrapping soaps but about a week before I was set to go I received the devastating news that my mother had been diagnosed with cancer one week before her 50th birthday. My focus went from soaps to family and that is where it has been the last month.
I am still planning to go out to St. Jacob's one last time this year, and bringing along my limited fall soap. Introducing... ........Pumpkin Pie spiced soap made with real pumpkin! Pumpkin does wonder for the skin. It is full of nutrients and anti-oxidants that allow your skin to achieve a healthy glow. Best thing about Soulful Soap's Pumpkin Pie Spiced soap is that its calorie and fat free!

Clean eating Blueberry Banana Muffins

I have always has an interest in nutrition and cooking. I credit my mother for teaching me this quality and allowing my cooking skills and knowledge to flourish at a very early stage in my life.

Whatever food that you put in your mouth, directly affects how your body functions. Your body is a machine you have to fuel it with wholesome, nutrient dense foods. By nutrient dense I mean bread, bought or homemade (better for you on so many different levels) with whole wheat grains, plenty of colourful fruits and vegetables (preferably raw as cooking kills off some nutrients) and also drinking plenty of water to keep your body hydrated and in peak condition.   It is very important to nourish your body properly in order for it to work efficiently. I am by no means a dietitian or a nutritionist, I am a cardiac nurse. I see first hand what poor eating does to the human body.

In honor of Canada's 143rd birthday and summer I made my favorite clean eating blueberry muffins.
The internet is a wonderful resource for many clean eating recipes. A good resource (and my favorite) to start your journey into clean eating is Clean Eating Magazine

Clean Eating Banana Blueberry Muffins
2 cups white whole wheat flour
1/3 cup Sucanat
1/2 tsp. ground cinnamon
2 tsp. baking powder
1 tsp. baking soda
1 1/2 cups mashed bananas
4 egg whites (you can use 2 small eggs instead)
1 tsp. vanilla extract
1/3 cup unsweetened applesauce
1 cup fresh blueberries

  • Preheat your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Put your *silicone muffin tray where you can easily reach it.
  • In one bowl mix all the dry ingredients.
  • In another bowl mix all the wet ingredients.
  • Combine wet and dry ingredients together.
  • Fold in the cup of blueberries.
  • Spoon combined batter into your silicone muffin bakewear.
  • Bake approximately 18 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center of a muffin comes out clean.

Enjoy with a nice cup of tea!

Carbohydrates:  31.5 g | Fiber:  1.7 g | Protein 4.2 g

*Using silicone bake wear eliminates the need to use butter or cooking spray making your muffins even more clean to eat and also being kind to the environment by not using paper muffin liners.

Cupcakes!!!

During the hot southern Ontario summer weather, my favorite scent is anything fruity, citrus or tropical. My all time favorite scent is lime and coconut. It reminds me of lounging on the beach listening to the surf and smelling the salty sea air. Although there are no oceans in Ontario, lime and coconut bring me there! While on vacation my favorite sea side drink is a Piña Colada, the perfect blend of tropical coconut and fruity pineapple and rum. In honor of the summer season, the Piña Colada cupcake soap was born and taking the summer season by storm!

What's New?!

As many of our soaps are getting to their 4 week curing mark, they are getting all packaged, labeled and ready to be shipped out. Our number one selling (and smelling!) soap is our comforting Warm Vanilla Oatmeal. This wonderful scent is the perfect blend of vanilla, coconut and a hint of sandalwood. You can also find skin soothing oatmeal throughout this bar.

Here at Soulful Soap we also take special orders for scents or essential oil blends that we do not normally keep in stock. A client recently contacted us with a request for soap that smells just like the rose bush in her backyard. We whipped up a batch of rose petal scented Shea butter soap that is now on the curing racks waiting for her to enjoy. Thanks Denise!

Once the Soulful Soap website is online there will be a section available to you for special orders with a list of fragrance oils and essential oils that we are able to create soap with. You are also able to email any special requested regarding scents or wholesale to vanessa@soulfulsoap.ca

Welcome!

Welcome to the blog of Soulful Soap. This is the place where you will see what new healing or delicious soaps are being made in the southern Ontario neck of the woods.
A lot of people ask me why I got into making my own soap when it is a very assessable and relatively cheap item to purchase. About a year ago I started experiencing irritated dry skin. This new skin aliment happened after moving into a new house in a new city as well as starting a new job. Trying to make the connection as to why I constantly had dry itchy skin (pruritus) I started to read ingredient labels on everything I bought and already had floating around the house. I found that more than 75% of ingredients listed were all man made chemicals that I had no idea how they were created nor what was used to create them. I decided right on the spot that I was going to start living as natural as possible and even more green then before. I started doing research right away on soap making and the rest was history, including my itchy skin. I'm proud to say that we make all natural soap with an ingredient list that you can pronounce.

This blog will be a resource for all natural products available at Soulful Soap, green living and everyday life around here on our little piece of country in the Big Steel City.
